University of Waterloo researchers conducted a study designed to isolate one of the effects that music in slot machines have. While the gambling industry has incorporated numerous music and tones into slots games for years, the precise impact of the music on gamblers hasn't been completely understoof.

The researchers checked out two groups of players and monitored them for signs of a physical response to music in addition to testing if it impacted their ability to accurately track their wins and losses.

An emotional and physiological response to music was present in the crowd that played slots with music, with players becoming more "aroused" (measured by the dampness in their hands) and reporting that they enjoyed gambling more when twiddling with music; the gang that played silent machines reported less enjoyment and arousal.

The study also examined the impact of "false" wins, which take place on multi-line machines when one line may repay -- triggering a winning chime or burst of music -- however the overall bet that comes with other lines could be a slight loser.

Researchers tested both groups again and located that not just did the gang playing on slot machines with sound enjoy their gambling sessions more but in addition they were more at risk of false wins, significantly overestimating what number of times then won by as much as 25% versus the crowd playing on silent machines.

It's no surprise that music and sounds on slot machines could make the experience more enjoyable for plenty of slots fans but it surely might shock some to be informed that the music too can give a false sense of winning.

An empty wallet might leave some slots players scratching their heads, as things gave the look to be going well during their session with quite a lot of bells and whistles and "wins" -- right up until the purpose once they suddenly had not more credits to play and not more cash to feed into the machine.

The research team was led by Mike Dixon of the University of Waterloo, with the consequences published within the Journal of Gambling Studies.
